Buggsy shoot
This shoot was an organised event for a live music event for the rapper and music artist ‘Buggsy’ the event was based in Exeter the Phoniex.
I did this shoot with a friend as the event manager contacted us to do this photo shoot. The artist him self produces grime music which can sometime have an aggressive hard core beat and vocals, also incorporating a narrative and hip-hop styled beats.
The event manager contacted us to ask if we could do a fisheye style image, with high flash and resolution making sure that we can a very sharp high quality image so we could also upload them to the required websites, (Facebook, tumblr, Wix etc)
This was my first time ever doing event photography so I didn’t really know what or how to take my images, I didn’t want to worry about editing because I know I could do that in Photoshop after my shoot. I wanted to concentrate on have the right angles for my images and the right type of lens and aperture etc. I knew I was going to have to shoot in auto as I didn’t have enough experience to shoot manually in a darkly lit room with distractions of people and load music.
The Equipment:
-
Nikon D90 Camera body
-
18-55mm lens
-
SB 800 Portable battery powered flash
-
8-10mm fisheye lens
All of the equipment I took out combined to make very good photos that matched the clienteles description of the images that she wanted. This I founded was my being step into being an event photographer.
Editing
I decided to edit my photos combining with the fisheye flash and upping all of the filters and effects in camera RAW and Photoshop. I upped the contrast and saturation as I really wanted to colours for the audience’s faces, the background and lights to pop out so they look a lot more appealing and eye catching. I lowered the highlights because the flash was a little over powering in some images if I wanted to get a really enhanced look by putting the camera really close range to the subject. This made a few images look washed out, I enhanced the blacks and shadows and I wanted a lot of depth in the image, also doing this editing techniques make the image look a lot more dark and grungy which was what I was going for. The most important factor of making an event images look grimy and urban is enhancing the clarity to a least 30+, this gives the best 3D effect on the image. Is emphasizes every single pore in the subjects faces, also and makes the image on the whole to look very dark and grimy, (which was what the client wanted)
The client wanted me to make sure I got picture of the acts playing their sets and also to make sure I got group shots of friends and different people in the audience, this way it promotes the artist; once I uploaded the image as they knew the images would be on the event page on Facebook, so they would look through and see and nice image of them and there friends. Further more the event manger wanted me to exaggerate how good the event actually looked, as the pictures normally look a lot better because of the lens I used and the editing of the image as the event was not that packed. But through Photoshop and editing I am able to do that and match my client’s needs.
This was my first stepping-stone into event photography and I have now learnt a lot more about what my client want in their images as normally event photography is very similar. I got a lot of my ideas and inspiration from a local photographer who does all of the photography for a lot of the clubs around Plymouth, such as Voodoo, the Hub Factory etc. his images have a very strong fisheye effect with some light trails, they are very unique and I have not seen this type of enhanced pop of style in any other event photography. I try to duplicate his style in the way of a stereotypical way of how people view event photography as it is most common.
Edited Images // Processes
The following is just a step-by-step process on how I edit my photos in Camera RAW and Photoshop after I photographed this event and what types of editing styles would incorporate with the images.

Before (un-edited)
After (edited)
This images shows how the client wanted to capture some individual characters in the crowed, the blacked out shadowed background spotlights the subject making them stand out. As you can see on the unedited image his skin looks very smooth and even, yet in the edited it looks almost dirty and grimy showing every imperfection. Making the subject look very sweaty and individual. I used the same editing techniques as the other image just not as much saturation and vibrancy as it can sometime make the person in the image look very orange and too fake.
Before (un-edited)

After (edited)

Camera RAW // editing

As you can see from the before and after unedited and edited images above, there is an enhanced difference in the shading the colour saturation and just the general image as it has much more of a pop and vibrancy to the image. I did most of the editing in camera RAW as it dose not reduce the quality as much compared to if you edit the image in Photoshop. Especially as this image has a lot of bright and colourful light trails it makes much more of a difference if you edit all of the filters in camera RAW.
