Evaluation
Over all I am pleased with this project as I feel I have really had a chance to experiment with my model/ client and also my studio set up.
At first I didn’t really know what my whole idea and concept was going to be, but I realised that I have had experience in the field of working with clients and having an expectation for the images to match, as previously I have worked with event organisers. One of my resent and reliable clients is the record label “R.U.D.E HQ” and event manager Terry Russel. I often do a lot of his up and coming live D.J nights in and around Plymouth. This gave me a bit of a starting point on how experienced and knowledgeable I am working with clientele information.
I thought from that point I would do an up and coming event for T.J as he hosts them quit often, I then decided to message him and inquire if there were any events. I got a Facebook message back from his saying that his only next event was going to be in Bristol and in march sometime, I knew at this point that it was way pay the deadline for my project brief so I would have to find something else.
This is when my client (Oriana Sanchez) emailed me and asked me to do a personal shoot for her as seen in the emails and messages, this was my perfect opportunity to use her as a client, she wanted the shoot in the studio and for it to be fashion based as she was applying for modelling agencies and they specifically asked for experience with in fashion based photography with either digital SLR and or film and media.
I was a little bit nervous for the shoot as I had never worked with this model /client before so I was very eager to see how photogenic she would be and if she would have a very strong preference for her images etc, I knew my client through college and were friends so communication was not a problem, it was just the anticipation on how she was going to behave and how easy it would be for me (as a friend) to tell her what positions she should do etc, I didn’t want to feel bossy or rude telling her what do to. But at the same time she did want my professional opinion on what would look good. Also it was my second time properly using and trying out gel lighting in the studio creating colourful shadows and I didn’t really know how to place them properly onto the lights.
Over all the shoot went very well booth Oriana and I were very satisfied with the images and I managed to get a variation of shots, including outfit changes hair alteration and lighting adjustments. When I was in the studio I thought that combining the colure lighting gels would be a fun experiment to see what kind of colours would shadow into the cove background as it is a very open big space, It was a a lot of pressure to make sure my lighting was right and we were not wasting time. One of my favourite gel lighting set ups was the red and blue as it gave a very bright 90’s vibe to the whole image, which was very convenient as this was exactly what she wanted.
It was very helpful that she did her own hair and MUA and it both saved us time so we could focus of shooting straight away as soon as we got in the studio. As discussed in our messages she talks and send me some picture of how she was going to style her her so it would fit into the theme of the whole 90’s 2000 designer shoot. This was very practical in the end as if in a different circumstance she did not do her own her and MUA we would ofused up all of the studio time. I only managed to get 2 hours in the studio as I did not end up going to the Mount Edgecumbe House because it did not fir into mine and my clients schedule, and also not the right theme of what my client wanted, she told me that after the shoot she felt very comfortable in the studio with just me as I did not push her into anything she did not want to do, for instance she does not have a lot of confidence about her body and she was modelling a 2 piece as she did not want me to shoot the bottom half of her body so I didn’t and asked her if she would fell more cover up if she put on a pair of tracksuit bottoms, this way it didn’t effect me or change the outfit that drastically and also she felt more comfortable working with me. The post production was one of my favourite parts of this whole project as I was so excited to edit my image as I already knew there were some very good shoots, I gave my self a lot of time to sit down and properly edit my images, although in contrast I did not really have to edit her face that much (by using air-brushing) I only really had to use the ‘spot healing tool’ on a very few of her minor blemishes on her face, this was only to make the image look even all over her face and when you zoomed in you would be able to see any imperfections. I used gel lighting the colours I used were; Red, Blue and Green. This was a nice mix as the red and green were very pigmented and showed up very bright on in the background and model but then the blue was subtler and gave more a highlighted blue effect on certain features depending on what she was doing in the shot. Both 2 colures at a time combined gave a very different important and effect on the image making the photos mood change. So it looked very playful and girly with the combination of red and blue, but then with the blue and green it gave a more emotional serious effect on the image because of the cool toned lighting. Personally I think this project turned out very well for my and I have learnt a lot through copyrighting my images and experimenting with new lighting setups and models.
